Customer Success Story: Upgrade to Asset Manager 9.3


Mentor Graphics is a publically held company, headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon. Mentor Graphics specializes in Electronic Design Automation software, enabling customers to design, generate and test software, chips and boards to facilitate development of electronic products.

Mentor Graphics currently utilizes HP Asset Manager, DDMi, Connect-It, Service Manager, Business Service Management, Business Process Management, and SiteScope. They recently upgraded to Asset Manager 9.3 in order to utilize the updated web client, take advantage of software asset management template enhancements, and to upgrade hardware to Windows 2008 servers.

IT Business Systems Analyst, Marla Hay, led and executed this upgrade to Asset Manager 9.3 for Mentor Graphics, with assistance from Evergreen Systems consultant, Richard VanderHoek. Marla and Richard will be presenting a detailed overview of the HP Asset Manager 9.3 upgrade project including scope, successes, and lessons learned. Marla Hay has over eight years’ experience at Mentor Graphics, in various positions within the Customer Support and IT divisions. Marla’s career has spanned multiple roles, from an applications engineer, to an operations and web team manager, to an IT business systems analyst. In her current position as an IT analyst, Marla has had the opportunity to work with multiple HP tools, including HP Asset Manager, Connect-It, Discovery and Dependency Mapping Inventory, Business Service Management, Business Process Monitor, and SiteScope. Marla worked with the HP Asset Manager tool set through the completion of the upgrade. She is now working with BSM, BPM and SiteScope, establishing application and server monitoring for critical applications in IT. Marla earned her Bachelors’ Degree in Computer Science from Cornell University, and is completing her Masters’ Degree in Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University’s Whiting School of Engineering.

Mary Kay Petersen is the Director of IT Service Management at Mentor Graphics, a manufacturer of Electronic Design Automation solutions headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Mary Kay has worked in the field of Information Technology for 25 years, the past 17 years at Mentor in roles of increasing responsibility. Most recently, Mary Kay has been the driving force behind adopting ITIL best practices at Mentor, selecting HP as a strategic vendor and recently implementing HP ServiceCenter for Global Help Desk & Operations and HP Asset Manager for managing IT Assets and Contracts.During her career, Mary Kay has managed Global Infrastructure for Engineering and Operations and implemented a variety of systems including SAP for Finance, Order Entry & HR, Siebel CRM for Sales and Customer Support, Enterprise Marketing Automation and Oracle Apps for Finance, Order Entry and Manufacturing. Prior to Mentor, Mary Kay held technical leadership roles at Sequent Computer, Cray Research, ETA Systems and Control Data Corporation. Mary Kay leads Vivit’s Oregon Chapter and HP Service Management worldwide special interest group. She graduated from University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business, Minnesota.


RIchard VanderHoek

Richard VanderHoek has accumulated over 11 years of experience in all phases of the IT Asset Management discipline. Richard began his IT Asset Management career at Fidelity Investments, spending 6 years implementing an ITAM solution; first within the data center environment, and ultimately across Fidelity in the US and Europe. Moving to Affiliated Computer Services (now a division of Xerox), Richard helped build a new IT Asset Management practice, incorporating up to 8 large customers into a single Asset Manager environment, developing process and technology standards, and building an offshore team to manage the large quantities of customer IT asset data. The past 3 years Richard has been with Evergreen Systems working as a Solution Architect, successfully architecting, installing and deploying Asset Manager for multiple large customers. Throughout those 11 years, Richard has developed ITAM business processes to streamline work and drive efficiency in data collection and reporting; developed customer-focused Asset Manager enhancements and customizations to meet specific business needs and requirements; and architected Asset Manager to fully integrate with other HP applications and third party data sources. Richard approaches every new initiative with a focus on maximizing the value that a customer will achieve through seamlessly incorporating Asset Manager into existing business processes and technologies.
